"My goal was pretty simple: I wanted to build a decent eight-string electric guitar for a reasonable price. After keeping an eye on Combine Guitars for quite a while, messaging the incredibly helpful owner for advice and specifications, and snagging my desired pickups for a steal purely by chance, I finally pulled the trigger and started the build.
The project came with a few challenges of its own. One of the biggest was designing and making my own routing templates to accommodate the extended-range pickups I chose: Fishman Fluence Modern 8s, along with their 9V battery compartment. I also spent an extremely laborious week hand-sanding and staining the body to achieve the “bleeding gem” effect I had envisioned, while still letting the beautiful maple veneer show through.
The build also taught me a lot about areas of guitar work that were completely new to me, particularly fret diagnostics, multiscale setup, and balancing string tension across the instrument. There was definitely a fairly steep learning curve, but nonetheless, I persevered and carried on.
Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But I made it, it works, and it sounds exactly like I wanted it to. Most importantly, I can finally chug Meshuggah without feeling like I'm missing that special something, namely, two extra low strings stapled onto it." - Alexander
