February's Guitar of the Month Winner!
We’re pleased to announce that Colin W. is the latest winner of our Guitar of the Month contest! His modified guitar is built using Combine's 8-String Multiscale Guitar DIY Kit. Here is his story:
"I had a blast with this project. I'm in the metal trades and am usually terrible with any woodworking but I was patient and couldn't be happier with the result.
I upgraded the pickups to Tosin Abasi Signature Fishmans. They took a long time to arrive so I machined blocks to test fit as I opened the holes up. They helped cover for the stain and clear coat as a bonus. I smoothed out the heel of the neck and body to knock off any edges, I wanted a smooth radius anywhere my thumb would be. Staining for the black burst was tough but eventually I got it. Fifteen coats of clear followed by some tedious sanding and polishing to get the finish I was after was the longest step. I had a friend help me with the wiring and am glad I did, it came out great and very professional. We changed to a 5 position super switch and push/pull volume knob (no tone knob) to copy the Tosin preferred wiring. It sounds amazing and there seems to be the perfect voicing for anything.
I think I got very lucky with the beautiful grain on the fingerboard. The look of the final product just makes me want to play it. I've gained an appreciation for the craft and am inspired to play more, I'd give the whole experience and result an 11/10." - Colin W.
