May's Guitar of the Month Contest Winner!

We’re pleased to announce that Ali is the latest winner of our Guitar of the Month contest! His guitar is built using Combine's 8-String Multiscale DIY Kit. Here is his story:

My name is Ali, Born in Canada into a somewhat musical family. I used to pick up my brother's guitar and jam to songs on the radio while he worked. I have been playing guitar for well over 30 years now. Was and still am influenced by bands like Stevie Wonder to Primus to Dream Theater. I have had the love of music and melody and gear for a long time. I have owned many guitars, amps, pedals and rack gear along the years. Some I loved, some I hated. Skip ahead a few years in my Prog metal phase, I had picked up a 7 string guitar. But to my dismay, it did not feel or sound the way I had envisioned a 7 string guitar to sound. So away it went to a new owner. In 2010, I heard of 8 string guitars in the metal. I always associated 8 string guitars to Jazz. Well was I ever surprised! What kept me from getting one was that guitars were bulky and not ergonomic.

So I waited and waited and waited. Until spring of last year, where I was looking for a new project to build. I've been an automotive tech for 20 years now so building race cars and fixing cars is my passion. For medical reasons' I had to quit the shop work and went for a mouse and keyboard instead. Now I took on the luthier and amp builder hobby and I'm set. I had just finished another guitar for myself that had cut outs for the leg and a more ergonomic feel and wanted something a little higher end. I found the Combine guitar website while looking for other projects to build. I fell head over heels in love with the look of the quilted top on this 8 string guitar. The neck was awesome and the body really had the whole ergonomic thing down solid. Well I ordered the kit and so it began. Of all the kits I found online, this one had what seemed to be the most attention to detail in the quality of the wood and the construction.

To sum it all up, I have played a lot of guitars, built and serviced enough guitars and amps to recognize quality. And this has quality all over it. The feel of a multiscale neck is very different from a regular style guitar. But man oh man does it rip. Cheers to Connors and his team for putting out an affordable kit. Can't wait to build another.

Ali will receive 50% off the base price of his next DIY Guitar Kit, and his build has been shared on our website and social media.
